What is Graves’ disease?

Graves-Basedow disease is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and hyperactivity of the thyroid gland, sometimes leading into hyperthyroidism. One of the most common symptoms of this disease affects the eyes, which appear protruding, but there are other symptoms that vary depending on the age of the patient: appetite and weight loss, muscle weakness, lack of concentration, hair loss or fatigue, etc.

Who is affected?

Research indicates that there is a genetic origin that is present in some families and triggers the appearance of the Graves-Basedow disease. In addition, and for unknown reasons, like many other autoimmune diseases, Graves’ disease is more prevalent among women than among men.

How is the treatment in Biosalud?

At Biosalud Day Hospital we specialize in the treatment of autoimmune diseases from the perspective of Biological Medicine. A conventional treatment, with immunosuppressors, can lead from an autoimmune hyperthyroidism to a hypothyroidism, but with Biological Medicine, we regulate the immune system and recover its normal functioning.

    Symptoms of Graves-Basedow Disease Syndrome

The Graves-Basedow disease commonly has the following symptoms: weight loss, despite increased appetite; anxiety, restlessness, trembling, irritability, insomnia, heat intolerance, sweating, chest pain, palpitations, breathing difficulty. Increased faeces frequency (with or without diarrhoea). Irregular menstrual periods. Muscle weakness. Difficulty controlling diabetes. Goiter. Protruding, prominent eyes. Vision problems (such as double vision).

    Diagnosis of Graves-Basedow disease

At Biosalud Day Hospital we take into account the medical and family history and symptoms, which is essential to make a first diagnosis. We also carry out thyroid tests to observe irregularities in its functioning. Knowing the medications or supplements that the patient is taking is extremely important, since the intake of drugs could influence the results of these tests.

    Treatment of Graves-Basedow disease

The aim of the treatments is to control the overproduction of thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism). Within conventional medicine, antithyroid pharmacology is proposed, which sometimes does not offer a long-term solution, radioactive iodine (RAI), or surgery when medicines are not tolerated.
In Biosalud Day Hospital we recommend a biological medicine treatment, especially effective for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, without side effects and preventive for the development of other autoimmune diseases. <br/ > Within the customization of treatment, the first thing we do in an autoimmune process is a functional regulation, a toxin drainage, and if necessary, chelation therapy to remove heavy metals, along with a bowel cleansing. We also consider the treatment of bacterial and/or viral and/or fungal infections. After a minimum period of 8 weeks, we will make a regulation of the immune system and a deactivation of the genetic loads that have been activated in the patient to develop the autoinmnune disease.
